Start a business AI agent with one repeatable task, not a model name. Define what comes in, what a successful result looks like, which data the agent may use, and where a person must make the final decision

1. Pick a task with a testable result

An agent might sort incoming emails and draft replies without sending them. Or it might collect a lead, ask follow-up questions, check available times and hand a booking request to a person for approval. If you cannot define a result that you can check, it is too early to let the system act independently

2. Decide whether you need an agent at all

A predictable process with fixed steps may only need ordinary automation. An agent makes more sense when requests vary and the system must decide whether to look up information, ask a question, use a tool or stop. Anthropic distinguishes predefined workflows from agents that direct their own use of tools, and recommends keeping the design as simple as the task allows

3. Define tools and access boundaries

List each system and each permission: read a selected email folder; find a free calendar slot; answer from the current knowledge base; prepare a CRM record but do not change its status without approval. Decide separately what the agent may read, suggest and change. Credentials, payments and promises to customers should never leak into customer-facing text or the agent's activity log

4. Write down the stop rules

Good examples are not enough. The agent also needs explicit failure conditions: missing information means ask; an unverified price means do not quote it; an exceptional request goes to a person; a failed tool call is not a successful outcome. First test without sending anything externally, then inspect what the system actually prepares

5. Test the outcome, not the polished reply

Use ordinary cases and difficult ones: an incomplete lead, conflicting details, a repeat request, a wrong address. Check whether the agent extracted the right information, used the right source, invented nothing and stopped before an important action. Expand its permissions only after those checks pass

Where this applies

For a system that works with your own tools, see what goes into building a custom AI agent. The personal AI assistant project is one example: requests arrive through Telegram and work is routed to the appropriate tools. Begin with one clearly described process, not a promise to automate your entire business at once
